Chapt One H

Organism- a complete and entire living thing

Species- organisms of the same type

6 Themes

1) Evolution- species change over time

adaptations

natural selection

2) Reproduction and inheritance

DNA

Gene

offspring

Sexual reproduction

Asexual reproduction - clone

Is reproduction necessary? for individual? for species?

3) structure and function-

anatomy

physiology

Form Follows Function

organisms made of cells- smallest unit of life

unicellular organisms

multicellular organisms

multicellular organisms grow from one cell to many- development-

during development, cells become different from one another- differentiation

development stops when organism reaches maturity- ability to reproduce

organisms grow by assilmilation- take in materials and change them into their own iving material

4) Homeostasis - Organisms maintain a stable internal environment

Stimulus / response

organisms respond to the environment - often to maintain homeostasis

behavior- complicated responses to the environment

5) Energy Use-

all organisms require energy

autotrophs capture energy from the environment and use it to make food

heterotrophs eat other organisms to get food for energy

both autotrophs and heterotrophs "burn" food to release the energy

most autotophs use sunlight to make their food- photosynthesis

Metabolism - the sum of all the processes in an organism that involve energy

6) Ecology- study of the relationship among organisms. A community of interdependent organisms is called an ecosystem
