LABORATORY
RULES
1) Do not talk loudly. Do not disturb your classmates.
2) Do not eat or drink in the lab room. Do not bring food into the lab room. Chewing gum is not permitted.
3) Do not smell taste or touch any chemicals unless told to do so by your teacher. Wash your hands thoroughly after any lab where you could have touched anything potentially dangerous.
4) Do not leave any experiment unattended. This is especially true if you are heating something.
5) Do not do anything beyond what the directions tell you. Do not use any equipment for any purpose other than what it is intended for. Do not play with the lab equipment.
6) If any accident or breakage occurs, notify the teacher at once. Be careful when cleaning up broken glass. Never handle it with bare hands. Ask your teacher for help.
7) Follow all safety instructions including the use of goggles when appropriate. Be aware of the location of the emergency shower, the fire blanket and the fire extinguisher.
8) Tie back long hair during lab. Do not wear long hanging necklaces, bulky jewelry or bulky clothing. Long sleeves should be rolled up above the wrist.
9) Return all equipment to the appropriate place when done.
10) Fooling around or other careless acts will not be permitted.
11) If you do not understand the instructions- ASK!!
12) All coats, books, bookbags etc. not needed for the lab should be put where they will not interfere with you or others. Only lab instructions and lab notebooks are needed in the lab area.
13) Do not move around the room unnecessarily. Students are not permitted in laboratory storage rooms without permission.
14) Clean all equipment before returning it. Work areas should be kept clean. At the end of lab, your work areas should be clean and dry.
15) Do not use the sinks, the cabinets or the drawers for trash. All trash should be put into the can at the front of the room. Broken glass and other sharp objects have a special container for disposal.
16) Do not remove any equipment or materials from the lab room unless told to do so by your teacher.
17) Do not play with the water faucets. They can be easily broken. Do not turn on the water unless you need to for the lab work.
18) A copy of these rules will be posted in the lab room. You should keep this copy in your notebook.
FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH THE LABORATORY RULES WILL RESULT IN THE FOLLOWING ACTIONS:
FIRST OFFENSE- Student will be asked to sit down and will not be allowed to continue work on the lab. A grade of zero will be recorded for the lab
SECOND OFFENSE-Parents will be asked to meet with the teacher and Science Department Head to discuss the student's failure to comply with lab safety rules.
Students and parents will be asked to sign a statement saying that they have been given a copy of these rules and have been given a statement of general classroom policies and that they have read and understood both of them.
To Parents:
Your child has been given a copy of the rules in effect during laboratory exercises and a statement of general classroom policies. Both you and your child should have signed a form (Safety Contract) acknowledging that you have read them and agree to abide by them.
FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH THE LABORATORY RULES WILL RESULT IN THE FOLLOWING ACTIONS:
FIRST OFFENSE- Student will be asked to sit down and will not be allowed to continue work on the lab.
A grade of zero will be recorded for the lab.
SECOND OFFENSE-Parents will be asked to meet with the teacher and Science Department Supervisor to discuss the student's failure to comply with lab safety rules.
